Why the North needs efficient heating

The areas we cover share two things that make boiler efficiency especially important: some of the oldest housing stock in the country, and some of its coldest, longest winters. From the colliery terraces of the Northumberland and Durham coalfields to the stone cottages of the Yorkshire Dales and the Georgian streets of Whitehaven and Berwick, a great many northern homes were built long before modern heating standards existed. Behind their front doors, a surprising number still run on the boilers they were fitted with decades ago — back boilers tucked behind living-room fires, bulky floor-standing units in kitchens and outhouses, and early non-condensing wall boilers that waste a quarter or more of the fuel they burn.

Rural and coastal communities face an added challenge. Many homes across upland Northumberland, the Dales and the Cumbrian fells sit off the mains gas grid and rely on oil instead, where an ageing, inefficient boiler is felt sharply every time the tank is refilled. Replacing one of these old units with a modern condensing model — whether gas or oil — is one of the most effective ways to cut bills and carbon at the same time, and it is exactly the kind of upgrade that grant funding exists to deliver.
