Boiler grant FAQs
Is the boiler really free?
Where your household meets the scheme criteria, government-backed funding covers the supply and installation of a new boiler, so there is nothing to pay. In a minority of cases a small contribution applies; we always confirm this in writing before any work starts.
Do I have to have an old boiler to qualify?
Yes — this is essential. Grants exist to remove inefficient old boilers (typically non-condensing units installed before 2005). A modern, efficient boiler does not qualify.
Which boilers count as 'old'?
Open-flue (conventional) boilers, back boilers, floor-standing boilers, non-condensing wall-hung boilers, older combi boilers and oil boilers — generally those fitted before 2005. See our old boilers page for details.
How do I know how old my boiler is?
Check for a white plastic condensate pipe (modern boilers have one), find the data plate for a manufacture date, and look for a hot-water cylinder and loft tanks. Our 'how to tell' guide explains each check.
Who qualifies for funding?
Households on certain means-tested benefits or low incomes, and sometimes those with a health condition worsened by a cold home. Both homeowners and (with landlord consent) private tenants can often apply.
Which benefits are considered?
Commonly Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based JSA, income-related ESA, Child Benefit (within thresholds), Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. Local 'flex' routes may help others on low incomes.
Can I apply if I rent my home?
Private tenants can often apply with the landlord's permission. Social housing tenants should contact their housing provider, who manages improvements directly.
How long does the whole process take?
After your eligibility check and a free survey, a typical boiler swap takes about a day. The end-to-end timescale depends on funding approval and scheduling, but we keep you informed throughout.

Will my new boiler save me money?
Almost always. Moving from a non-condensing boiler (around 65–78% efficient) to a modern A-rated condensing boiler (over 90%) typically cuts heating costs noticeably.
Is there any obligation?
None. The eligibility check and survey are free, and you are under no obligation to proceed. We will never charge you to find out whether you qualify.

What happens during the free survey?
A qualified surveyor visits your home to confirm the type and age of your existing boiler, check the condition of your heating system and pipework, and make sure a replacement can be installed safely. It is a no-obligation visit, and the surveyor will happily answer any questions you have about the work or the funding.
Do I need to be at home for the installation?
Yes, an adult needs to be present on the day so the engineers can access the property, the boiler and the gas or oil supply. A typical swap takes about a day, and the team will leave everything clean and tidy, talk you through your new controls, and make sure you are comfortable before they go.
What kind of boiler will I receive?
Eligible homes receive a new A-rated condensing boiler from a reputable manufacturer, sized to suit the property. Gas homes usually get a modern combi or system boiler, while off-grid homes receive a condensing oil boiler. Every unit comes with a manufacturer's warranty registered on your behalf.
