Open-Flue (Conventional) Boilers
An open-flue boiler — also called a conventional, regular or heat-only boiler — is one of the oldest arrangements still found in British homes. It heats water for your radiators and sends hot water to a separate storage cylinder, usually in an airing cupboard, while cold-water and feed-and-expansion tanks sit up in the loft. The 'open flue' refers to how it works: the boiler takes the air it needs for combustion from the room around it and vents its exhaust gases up a flue that is open to the atmosphere.
How to recognise a open-flue (conventional) boilers
Use these tell-tale signs to work out whether this is the boiler in your home:
- There is a separate hot-water cylinder, typically a copper tank, in an airing cupboard.
- One or two water tanks sit in the loft (a large cold tank and a small feed-and-expansion tank).
- The boiler itself has no fan you can hear; it relies on natural draught up the flue.
- You cannot run hot water instantly forever — once the cylinder is used up, you wait for it to reheat.
- There are often air vents or an airbrick near the boiler to feed the open flue.

Common problems with open-flue (conventional) boilers
Open-flue systems lose heat in several ways at once. The boiler is almost always non-condensing, so a third of the fuel goes up the flue as wasted heat. The stored hot water in the cylinder cools over time, wasting more energy, and the loft tanks and long pipe runs add further losses and the risk of frozen or burst pipes in winter.
